Here’s the honest answer: ChatGPT is not a certified personal trainer, physical therapist, or sports medicine physician. It does not know your injury history, your movement limitations, or the way your left shoulder clicks when you press overhead. If you ask it a vague question — “give me a workout” — it will give you a generic answer that may or may not be appropriate for your body.

But here’s what most cautious beginners don’t realize: the safety gap isn’t in the AI. It’s in the prompt.   • It defaults to intermediate or advanced movements unless told otherwise. Ask for “a strength workout” and you may get barbell back squats, Romanian deadlifts, and pull-ups — all excellent exercises that require significant technique experience to perform safely.
  • It skips warm-ups unless you ask for them. The output is typically a list of working sets with no mobility preparation, which is how beginners get hurt in the first few minutes of a session.

My health conditions are [list any — or state ‘none diagnosed’]. Based on this profile, before building any plan, list the exercise categories I should avoid completely and the modifications I should use for common movements.”

That final instruction — asking ChatGPT to list avoidances and modifications before generating a plan — is the critical safety step. It forces the AI to process your limitations explicitly rather than embedding a generic workout that happens to include movements that are wrong for your body.
