The important caveat: short-term improvement is not the same as permanent flexibility gain. These changes are measured minutes after treatment, and there’s no strong evidence they last for days or reshape your baseline flexibility over time.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the stiffness and tenderness that shows up 12 to 24 hours after unfamiliar or intense exercise, usually peaking around 24 to 72 hours later. Feeling recovered (looser, less tense, more relaxed) is a real and valuable experience. Objectively recovering muscle function, strength, and performance capacity faster is a separate question, and the current evidence doesn’t clearly support the second claim.

Across strength, power, speed, agility, and endurance, the evidence does not consistently support performance improvements. The same 2023 systematic review that found positive flexibility results explicitly concluded that massage gun use is not recommended for strength, balance, acceleration, agility, or explosive activities, and in some explosive-power tests, researchers observed a decrease in performance rather than an improvement.[1]

A separate systematic review looking specifically at strength and pain outcomes found more favorable associations with a single application increasing acute strength measures in some studies, though these findings were less consistent across the full body of research and shouldn’t be read as a settled conclusion.[2]

Claim #5: Massage Guns Improve Blood Flow

This one is biologically plausible and has direct supporting evidence. A controlled study using ultrasound imaging found that localized vibration from a massage gun significantly increased blood flow in the popliteal artery (behind the knee), with higher frequencies producing bigger increases.[8]

It’s important to separate this specific, measured finding from bigger unsupported claims like “flushing toxins” or dramatically accelerating whole-body recovery. A local, temporary increase in blood flow to one muscle is a real, documented effect. It is not the same as a systemic detox or a guaranteed recovery boost.

Each of these deserves a direct myth-bust.

“Breaking up knots” is a common phrase, but it’s an oversimplification of what’s actually happening. A “knot” (myofascial trigger point) isn’t a physical tangle that gets mechanically untied; it’s more likely a localized area of muscle tension and altered nerve sensitivity. Percussion therapy may temporarily reduce the sensation of a knot through the nervous system pathways described above, not by physically dissolving anything.

“Breaking up scar tissue” is not an established effect of massage guns. Scar tissue remodeling is a slow biological process; there’s no good evidence a handheld percussion device meaningfully alters mature scar tissue structure.
