Hot yoga is one of the most demanding hydration environments in recreational fitness. Understanding the mechanism makes the protocol make sense.

At normal exercise temperatures, your body’s primary cooling mechanism is sweat evaporation — sweat leaves the skin, evaporates in the air, and carries heat away from your body. In a hot yoga room at 40% humidity, that evaporation is significantly impaired. The air is already carrying substantial moisture, which limits how much sweat can evaporate, which in turn forces your body to produce even more sweat to maintain core temperature. You sweat more, but the cooling effect per unit of sweat is lower than it would be in a cool, dry environment.2

Step 1: The Day-Before Protocol — Hydration Starts 24 Hours Out

The 24-hour pre-class hydration approach:

Your baseline daily water target is body weight (in pounds) multiplied by 0.5 to 0.67 ounces. For hot yoga days, aim for the upper end of that range — 0.67 oz per pound throughout the day before class.

  • Day before: Hit your full daily water target, which many people don’t on a typical day. Add one electrolyte serving in the afternoon or evening, particularly if you train regularly or live in a warm climate where baseline sweat rate is higher.
  • Morning of class: Drink 16–24 oz of water with your morning routine, regardless of what time your class is.
